Agents and workflow engines for inter-organizational workflows in e-government cases

چکیده
Purpose – The paper aims to propose a web-based “intermediation hybrid architecture” for a workflow management system that integrates services by exploiting and combining the advantages of strict centralized topologies that use workflow engines, with totally distributed systems which use agent technologies. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed operational and technical architectures define the combination of a workflow engine and a software agent platform for the appropriate management of inter-organizational workflow processes. The proposed system is called “hybrid intermediation portal.” Findings – The hybrid system was used in e-government cases for the management of cross-border workflows that span across multiple European chambers of commerce and industry. That demonstrated the usefulness of the specific approach in the inter-organizational workflow management domain. Research limitations/implications – The approach presented in this paper was implemented and validated in real e-government cases that proved the advantages of the potential commercial use of the system. Several limitations were located due to the lack of a wide use of web services within governmental organizations. Practical implications – Concerning security issues, it would be necessary to integrate appropriate security mechanisms without constraining the technical and functional characteristics of the software agents involved. Originality/value – The contribution of the paper concerns the evolvement of the agent-enhanced workflow management systems in order to tackle the intelligence issues and the credibility problems concerning the overall control of dispersed inter-organizational processes.

Chinese wall security for decentralized workflow management systems
Workflow systems are gaining importance as an infrastructure for automating inter-organizational interactions, such as those in Electronic Commerce. In such an environment, a centralized Workflow Management System is not desirable because: (i) it can be a performance bottleneck, and (ii) the systems are inherently distributed, heterogeneous, and autonomous in nature. Decentralized execution of ...
متن کاملThe view-based approach to dynamic inter-organizational workflow cooperation
This paper presents a novel approach to inter-organizational workflow cooperation. Our goal is to provide support for organizations which are involved in a shared but not pre-modeled cooperative workflow across organizational boundaries. Our approach allows for partial visibility of workflows and their resources, thus providing powerful ways for inter-organizational workflow configuration. Vary...
متن کاملRequirements for Using Agent-Based Automation in Distributed e-Government Applications
This paper describes some requirements for using software agents to automate many tasks in eGovernment applications. First, the architecture must be able to support workflow engines, transparent reliability, and security. Second, data must be presented in a format that can be understood by any system component that uses the data. Third, it must be possible to define processes in terms of distri...
متن کاملMulti-Agents Coordination Model in Inter- Organizational Workflow: Applying in Egovernment
Inter-organizational Workflow (IOW) is commonly used to support the collaboration between heterogeneous and distributed business processes of different autonomous organizations in order to achieve a common goal. E-government is considered as an application field of IOW. The coordination of the different organizations is the fundamental problem in IOW and remains the major cause of failure in e-...
متن کاملXRL/Woflan: Verification and Extensibility of an XML/Petri-Net-Based Language for Inter-Organizational Workflows
Internet-based technology, E-commerce, and the rise of networked virtual enterprises have fueled the need for inter-organizational workflows. Although XML allows trading partners to exchange information, it cannot be used to coordinate activities in different organizational entities. Therefore, we developed a workflow language named XRL (eXchangeable Routing Language) for supporting crossorgani...
